About
Dr. Austin Motley recently joined the faculty of the OBU Division of Music as Assistant Professor of
Music, teaching applied low brass as well as Music History, Aural Skills, and Fine
Art: Music courses. Before coming to OBU, Dr. Motley taught Applied Trombone and Music
History at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Motley is a very active performer,
having recently performed the third movement of De Meij's T-Bone Concerto with a regional
high school band in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since 2019, Dr. Motley has held the position
of Principal Trombone with the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Motley has performed
with many notable ensembles, including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati
Pops Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Battle Creek
Symphony Orchestra, Richmond (IN) Symphony Orchestra, Billings Symphony Orchestra, Kentucky Symphony
Orchestra, and Flying Circus Big Band. Dr. Motley is an Edwards Performing Artist.
As an advocate for church music, Dr. Motley serves on the worship arts team at Second
Baptist Church. Dr. Motley earned a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree and Master of Music
Degree in trombone performance and pedagogy with a related field in wind conducting
from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, as well as a Bachelor
of Arts Degree from Truman State University. Dr. Motley and his wife, Kirsten, enjoy
spending time with their daughter, Ellie, born in February of 2022.
