Mary Handiboe Associate Professor of Theatre Arts Mary Handiboe teaches performance and core theatre classes at Ouachita Baptist University, where she also received her B.A. in both theatre and speech. Mary’s M.F.A. in acting is from the University of New Orleans. While in the Big Easy, Mary did professional television and commercial work. She has also studied with The New Actors Workshop (Paul Sills/Story Theatre) in New York City, and now utilizes much of their philosophies of improvisation and status work in her teaching and directing. As a performer, Mary has enjoyed roles such as Elizabeth in The Crucible, the Narrator in The Three Penny Opera, Elaine Rutledge in The Miss Firecracker Contest, Susan in Woman in Mind, Mrs. Webb in Our Town, and Mrs. Samsa in Metamorphosis. Favorite directing opportunities have included The Boys Next Door, She Loves Me, The Bald Soprano, The Crucible, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and This Is Where We Came In, which received a regional nomination and numerous state awards through the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival (KC/ACTF). Mary has also served KC/ACTF as the Arkansas Chair and Vice Chair. Besides being very active with her teaching career, Mary enjoys being a wife and the mother of three boys: a teenager, a pre-teen, and a toddler.
