Scholarships and Financial Aid

Scholarships are available!

Prospective and current students are invited to apply for scholarship funds available through the Department of Art and Design. Scholarships are competitive and recipients are expected to involve themselves in service to the department and fellow students. Academic performance, character, need and community involvement among other criteria are considered by faculty in choosing recipients. Awarding of these scholarships is guided by such criteria and includes a portfolio of 8 to 10 recently created artworks and a survey that asks applicants a variety of questions related to the above described criteria such as need, community involvement, academic performance and the applicants goals as a student at Ouachita.

Completed applications and portfolio materials will begin being reviewed in November for students enrolling in the upcoming academic year. Applications will be accepted and reviewed until all scholarships are awarded.

Scholarships offered by the Department of Art and Design are awarded to full-time students who enroll in a four-year program as a Art and Design major.

Steps to apply

Step 1: Apply to the university

Submit an application to Ouachita.

Step 2: Compile a portfolio of your artwork

In addition to meeting the general requirements for admission to the university, students who intend to apply for a scholarship in Art and Design must also submit a portfolio of work in art and/or design to the Department of Art and Design.

Your submission should include:

  • 8-10 images of your artwork and a numbered checklist corresponding to the images, stating the size, date, and medium of each piece;
  • A resume including your contact information and highlighting your achievements and community involvement;
  • A one-page statement of purpose indicating your intended major, why you desire to pursue a degree in art or design, and how you see yourself becoming involved in the community of the art department.

Step 3: Edit and Submit your portfolio

Please do not email submissions to us. You may send your materials on a CD, thumb drive, or via an online file sharing service such as Dropbox. In person visits and portfolio reviews with faculty members are welcome in addition to the digital portfolio submission.

All materials should be placed in a folder labeled as follows: [FIRST NAME]_[LAST NAME]_[YEAR OF YOUR ENTRANCE] Scholarship Portfolio. (For Example: John_Doe_2016-17 Scholarship Portfolio)

Photographs of your work should be no smaller than 8 x 10 inches at 72dpi, saved in either a jpeg, tiff, or pdf format, and labeled as [FIRST NAME]_[LAST NAME]_[ARTWORK TITLE]_[MEDIUM]_[YEAR CREATED].

For instructions on how to create and share a Dropbox folder, visit https://www.dropbox.com/help/19/en.

Step 4: Letters of Recommendation

Applicants should request two letters of recommendation and have them sent to the Chair of Art and Design, see contact information below. Preferably, one letter should speak to the applicant’s artistic abilities while the other may speak to the applicant’s character and abilities in general. Letters should not be provided by an immediate family member or close relative.
