I will be an assistant professor in the Department of Language and Literature. I will
be teaching several sections of Composition I, helping students understand and create
college-level writing, with application to professional life as well. I will teach
rhetorical strategies and research writing.
Biography
I grew up in Arkadelphia and Ouachita was my first and only choice for my undergraduate
degree. I intended to teach junior high and high school students in grades 7-12, but
God had other plans for me. Within a few days of my graduation, I received a telephone
call encouraging me to apply to be a graduate assistant in English at Henderson State
University and begin a master's program. I applied and interviewed on the same day
and began taking classes and teaching remediated English courses just a few weeks
later, finishing my master's degree in two years. A week after my graduation, Dr.
Bill Ellis, who was at the time Chair of the English Department at Ouachita called
me with an offer to teach in a full-time, fill-in role for one year. I strongly felt
God's calling to come back to Ouachita. The one-year offer extended for another few
years, but eventually, I was teaching as an adjunct at both Ouachita and Henderson,
which continued until 2000, when I was offered a permanent, fulltime position at Henderson,
teaching Technical Writing and Managment Communications. I taught fulltime at Henderson
for twenty years. In 2020, my son chose to come to Ouachita as a pre-med major. In
2022, I was led to reach out to friends at Ouachita about the possibility of coming
back to teach here. I started work in the summer of 2022 and have worked for Dr. Jeff
Root in the Humanities office and taught Composition I and Business Communications
classes. When I told my son that I had accepted the position at Ouachita, he sent
me a text saying, "Welcome Home." This is more than a motto or slogan to me: it represents
the positive, nurturing atmosphere I found at this place as a student and as an employee.
Being able to live out my faith every day in every class and in every professional
experience seems like a reward my career. My daughter joined us on campus in 2023,
so we have truly made Ouachita a home for our family.
My family and I are members of Third Street Baptist Church here in Arkadelphia. We
have a dog and a cat who rule our household.
Q&A
Why did you come to Ouachita?
Each time I have come to Ouachita (first as a student and twice as an instructor),
I have come because of the appeal of teaching in a Christ-centered learning environment
with dedicated professors and quality students.
Why did you decide to become a professor?
I knew early on that I wanted to teach English at some level, but the call to university
teaching, which seemed to me to come late in my employment search, actually came right
on time because of a Ouachita professor who believed that I had something to offer.
That he reached out to me to ask me to apply was extremely meaningful to me. Those
first years of teaching at Ouachita solidified my love for and commitment to teaching
at the undergraduate level. College students have contagious energy and excitement,
and watching their growth on campus is an awe-inspiring experience.
Why is your subject an important one in our world?
Even in a world drowning in AI, personal and professional writing skills, critical
thinking, and valid research are essential to success.
What do you want future students to know about your degree program?
Degrees in Language and Literature prepare students for graduate schools and professional
employment by fostering the critical thinking/analysis skills that literally everyone
needs.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love camping and boating with my family on beautiful Lake DeGray. I love cooking
and baking. I also love reading mystery/detective novels.
What has been a meaningful Bible verse or passage for you?
I grew up attending Camp Siloam and enjoyed singing all of the praise songs that were
part of every worship service. There I learned Proverbs 3:5-6 in song form: Trust
the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways,
acknowledge him, and he will make straight your path. The simple melody of this song
helped impress its words on my heart, and more than 40 years later, singing this verse
calms my heart and reminds me to trust God in all things.
