Campus Technology Guide

Ouachita maintains a large stock of information technology equipment for faculty, staff, and student use. The purpose of this document is to help familiarize students with the available equipment and its location.

Network information

Every building on Ouachita’s campus is connected to a campus wide computer network. Each office has a network drop and each residence hall room has two network drops for connecting computers to the campus network.

Every network user is bound by a Code of Computing Practices. This can be found in the student Tiger Handbook as well as online. It is imperative that each student read the document and understand it before using the network.

Students are assigned a network account when they enroll in school and keep the account until they graduate or fail to enroll for 2 consecutive fall/spring semesters. A network account authorizes the student to send and receive e-mail, use network resources, and store files on a network server (optional.)

Each computer on the campus network also has access to the Internet. The University maintains a firewall to protect the network resources and to filter pornographic websites.

Each student is allowed to use the University’s server to send and receive e-mail. The e-mail address is in the format username@obu.edu (username is the first 3 letters of the last name and the ID number). The University faculty and staff use e-mail to communicate with the students. It is very important that students periodically check their campus e-mail for important messages.

Other Technology Resources

A scanner, color printer, and CD burner for student use are available in Instructional Media Services located on the first floor of the library. The computer that the scanner is connected to is dedicated to that purpose. Using it for e-mail and web browsing is not allowed. This computer is connected to the campus network.

There is not a dedicated fax machine for student use. Various administrative offices have fax machines that they will allow students to use in special circumstances.

The IT Services Department provides support for issues relating to the campus network and various software packages including Microsoft Office. Please note: Students in need of hardware repair should contact a vendor. Three support options are available:
