University of Alicante

Alicante, Spain

Alicante

Intro

The University of Alicante offers a strong intensive Spanish language program.  It is recommended that only students who are majoring or minoring in Spanish should consider this as their study abroad option.  Students who are serious about leaning Spanish may also consider this option, but they should understand and appreciate that they will be involved in serious language study for the duration of their stay.

Alicante is located on the Mediterranean coast.  It has its own airport and good train connection to Madrid and other parts of Spain.

Language

The option to study topics other than Spanish is not available to OBU students.

Academics

Because language learning has to be done in series, the student will take four semester hours of credit over the course of four weeks.  Every four weeks the student will begin a new cycle and will receive four semester hours of credit—3 for language and one hour for a complementary class—such as Spanish Culture or literature.  Grades for each four week segment will be made available to students, so they do have a clear idea of their performance throughout the semester.  The student will complete 4 semester hours of academic credit every four weeks for 16 weeks for a total of 16 semester hours of credit.

Lodging & Meals

Students may opt to stay with families or in apartments.  Lately students have opted to stay in apartments, but both options are available to students.  Students who stay with a family will have meals provided, but they will be charged on a per day basis that is not prorated during absences.

Cost & Financial Aid

Please refer to the OBU cost sheet.  The University of Alicante is regarded as a very affordable and cost effective program due to the fact that the Government of Spain does not charge international students a premium to attend their universities

Visas & Travel

Yes, the visa process is rigorous and has to be obtained at the Spanish Consulate in Houston.  Students will be guided in the process by the OBU international office, but students must take personal responsibility of providing all information in a timely manner.
