A Weekly Word: Jeremiah 33:3
January 01, 2020
I have no memory of life without the church. Growing up in a mill town, our church was filled with good, hardworking people. How good this time was has crystallized over the years. It was not uncommon that on a Wednesday or Sunday night, our pastor might ask if anyone had a favorite verse they would share. These verses were mostly ones you would know and recognize as favorites of the congregation. If someone had not recited a specific one fairly quickly, my dad would stand and say, "Call unto me and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things that you do not know" (Jeremiah 33:3).
I never hear this verse that I do not think of Dad. He has been in heaven since 1991, but his love of the church, our Lord and God's word impacts me as I write this devotional today. When dad passed suddenly from this life, my mom, brother and I decided it would be a testament of his faith to have Jeremiah 33:3 on his headstone.
Call unto me and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things that you do not know.
Jeremiah 33:3
Another verse in Jeremiah has become one of my favorites. "For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope" (Jeremiah 29:11). I have been blessed to see God's faithfulness across many years now. I have learned that He truly has a plan for everyone, including me. His plan is good and fills us with expectancy.
Allow me to attempt to apply this to your life today by joining these two great verses together. God's plan for you is above what you can imagine. Not until a few years ago would I have thought God would lead me to be president of Ouachita. I am now one hour away from my boyhood church that fills my mind with memories and a strong foundation. Not only is God's plan greater than you would think, it is good. God's plan is hopeful and leads to a bright future here and forever.
What you are doing at this time in your life is a part of God's greater plan. Embrace it. It is going to be good!
