Malmer, a music education major from Little Elm, Texas, is a National Association of Teachers of Singing 2024 state finalist and earned second place in Ouachita’s 2024 Mary Shambarger Competition for Singers. She has prepared for this senior project for a year. The performance, which is free and open to the public, includes music inspired by the works of William Shakespeare.

The recital will feature “Batti, batti O bel Massetto” from Don Giovanni by W.A Mozart, “An die Nacht” from Sechs Lieder by Richard Staruss, selections from Six Elizabethan Songs by Dominick Argento and “When Daisies Pied” by Thomas Arne. This program includes selections from classical, romantic and modern periods.

Accompanying Malmer will be pianist Kristen La Madrid, coordinator of accompanists for the Division of Music. Dr. Margaret Garrett, professor of music and interim vocal coordinator for the Division of Music, guided Malmer in selecting literature for the program.

“Kieran’s vocal technique has grown through the recital preparation process,” Garrett said. “She has always had a beautiful voice, but it’s maturing into a powerful instrument.”

Malmer noted she has been looking forward to this recital since her freshman year and is proud of her accomplishments.

Seniors pursuing a Bachelor of Music Education are required to perform a recital before beginning student teaching.

Ouachita students in attendance may earn Arts Engagement credit.
