November 12, 2008 - OBU News Bureau

The cast and crew of Ouachita Baptist University’s production of Is He Dead? earned several prestigious awards during the Arkansas State Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, held on Nov. 8 in Fort Smith, Ark.

The performance earned both the Respondents’ Choice and the Directors’ Choice awards, nominating the play for consideration for presentation on the regional level. Ouachita was the only school from Arkansas to receive a regional nomination. The Region VI selection committee will deliberate over all nominated performances from Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico in December. Seven regional productions will be presented at Texas State University-San Marcos in late February.

The play was directed by Daniel Inouye, assistant professor of theatre arts.

Ouachita students and faculty earned seven additional awards for the production. Inouye earned an award for “Excellence in Directing.” Jeffrey Stokes, a senior theatre arts major from Gilmer, Texas, supervised by Mary Handiboe, assistant professor of theatre arts, earned “Excellence in Costume Design.” Stokes was also recognized for “Honor Crew Participation,” along with Rachel Garret-Bland, a senior theatre arts major from Mesquite, Texas, and Manna Yamasaki, a freshman mass communications major from Japan. Daniel Collier, a junior musical theatre major from North Little Rock, Ark., earned “Excellence in Stage Management.” Leah Nixon, a senior theatre arts major from Celeste, Texas, earned “Excellence in Dramaturgy.” The entire company, led by professor of theatre arts Eric Phillips, earned “Excellence in Load-in/Load-out.”

Three students earned an award for “Excellence in Acting,” in the form of nominations for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Auditions, which will be held at the regional festival. They are: Lauren Godfrey, a senior musical theatre major from Rockwall, Texas; Michael Krikorian, a junior musical theatre major from Rockwall, Texas; and Greg Schwartz, a junior theatre arts major from Texarkana, Texas.
