5th Annual Ouachita Concerto Competition to be held Dec. 10

The fifth annual Ouachita Baptist University Wind and Percussion Concerto Competition will be held at 3 p.m. on Dec.10 in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The competition is free and open to the public.

Students must have completed at least one year of undergraduate study and must have their instructor’s approval in order to participate. They will perform one musical number in the form of a concerto, multi-movement number or another piece that requires wind ensemble accompaniment. Each piece will be accompanied by piano.

Fourteen OBU instrumentalists will be competing this year for cash prizes and a possible featured position with the OBU Wind Ensemble’s 2011 Spring Tour. First place will receive a $500 award, second place will receive a $300 award and third place will receive $200.

Participants, listed by instrument, include:

Alto saxophone – John Ashburn, a senior instrumental music education major from Monroe, La.; Alex Goff, a junior instrumental music education major from Nashville, Ark.; Alissa Hill, a senior instrumental music education major from Bella Vista, Ark.; Bradley Lindsey, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Longview, Texas; Brian Matney, a senior music major from Gravette, Ark.; and Cyrus Morris, a junior music performance major from Katy, Texas.

Clarinet – Ruthie Stoner, a sophomore music performance major from McKinney, Texas.

Flute – Aubrey Elliott, a senior instrumental music education major from Bentonville, Ark.; Kathryn Lee, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Azle, Texas; and Elyse Senteney, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Plano, Texas.

French horn – Kelsey Bates, a junior instrumental music education major from Marion, Ark.; and Leah Jones, a senior instrumental music education major from Burkburnett, Texas.

Tenor trombone – Andrew McCraw, a junior instrumental music education major from Fort Worth, Texas; and Sean Nance, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Dallas, Texas.
