March 07, 2011 - Whitney Crews
The Ouachita Baptist University Wind Ensemble will present its spring concert Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center on the Ouachita campus. The concert is free and open to the public.
This year the ensemble will feature pieces by a variety of composers. Beginning the
concert will be Walter Hartley’s “Sinfonia No. 4,” followed by “Concerto for Alto
Saxophone and Band” by Paul Creston, featuring John Ashburn, a junior music education
major from Sachse, Texas, and winner of the 2010 Ouachita Instrumental Concerto Competition,
who will be performing a solo on the alto saxophone.
Also included in the program will be “Song” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William
Bolcom and “Lincolnshire Posy,” composed by Percy Aldridge Grainger. Concluding the
program will be a new march by John Mackey titled “Xerxes.”
Dr. Craig Hamilton, professor of music, director of bands and conductor for the Wind
Ensemble, affirmed the group’s performance quality. “I think the audience will appreciate
the variety of music and the level of performance of the Wind Ensemble program,” he
said.
A live webcast of the performance will also be available on the OBU band website,
www.obu.edu/band, for those unable to attend.
