Christina Wood to present senior piano recital at Ouachita April 26

April 20, 2012 - OBU News Bureau

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will present Christina Wood in her senior piano performance recital Thursday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. The recital, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall on Ouachita’s campus.

“This recital is a demonstration of the skill and technique that I have acquired in my lessons while here,” Wood said. “This recital will be the largest solo performance opportunity I have while on campus.”

Wood, a native of Longview, Texas, has served as president, vice president of membership and treasurer for Ouachita’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota international music fraternity for women (SAI). She has also been a member of Pi Kappa Lambda national music honor society. Wood has earned the Queen Piano Award from the Little Rock Musical Coterie, the SAI Honor Award at OBU and third place and honorable mention awards in OBU’s Virginia Queen Piano Competition.

After working toward this recital for four years, Wood said that each piece in her recital has its own significance to her. “They each describe periods of my life in the last year,” she said, “periods of success or failure, elation or depression.”

The recital will begin with the first three movements of J.S. Bach’s “English Suite No. 3 in g minor:” “Prelude,” Allemande” and “Courante.” She will continue with “Allegro con brio” from Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Sonata in C Major Op. 53, No. 21” and “Harmonies du Soir” from Franz Liszt’s “Transcendental Etudes.”

Wood will then perform two selections by Claude Debussy: “Ondine” from Preludes Book II and “L’isle joyeuse.” The recital will conclude with all four movements of Béla Bartók’s “Suite, Op. 14:” “Allegretto,” “Scherzo,” “Allegro molto” and “Sostenuto.”
