April 23, 2012 - Lacey Brooks

Ouachita Baptist University will host the Ouachita Singers and Women’s Chorus in their spring concert Monday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. The concert is open to the public and admission is free.

The Ouachita Singers, under the direction of Division of Music Chair Dr. Gary Gerber, will perform “The Conversion of Saul” by Z. Randall Stroope, “Dravidian Dithyramb” by Victor Paranjoti, “Sleep” by Eric Whitacre and “Ehre sei dir, Christe” by Heinrich Schütz. In addition, Paul Huenefeld, a senior music major from Heber Springs, Ark., will conduct the choir for a piece by Randall Thompson titled “The Last Words of David.”

“I feel very privileged to have this opportunity because it is rare to have the chance to work with and conduct such a talented group like Singers,” Huenefeld said.

Women’s Chorus, under the direction of David Stanley, visiting instructor of music, will perform "Morning Hymn and Alleluia" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music, "Sing Creations Music On" by Stephen Paulus, Andrea Klouse's arrangement of Kurt Bestor's "Prayer of the Children,” "All That Hath Life and Breath Praise Ye the Lord" by Rene Clausen, "Veni, Domine" by Felix Mendelssohn, Kirby Shaw's arrangement of George and Ira Gershwin's "Embraceable You" and "Blessing" by Katie Moran Bart.

“We are preparing some very challenging, exciting pieces of music for this concert, as well as selections from various musical styles and genres – music for a variety of audience tastes,” Stanley said. “I love working with these ladies because of their passion and love for the art of music.”

“I am really excited about the upcoming concert because it really does provide an opportunity to lead others in worship. Mr. Stanley has helped us to cultivate a great sound,” said Breanna Holder, a junior church music major from El Dorado, Ark.

Ouachita Singers is a choir open to any student on campus through audition in the spring. It includes freshmen to seniors of all majors. This year, there are 45 students in the group. Women’s Chorus is an auditioned group with just under 40 members this year.
