Ouachita to host fifth annual FORE Ouachita Golf Tournament Sept. 16
September 06, 2013 - Taylor Tomlinson
Ouachita Baptist University’s fifth annual FORE Ouachita Golf Tournament will tee
off Monday, Sept. 16, at 8 a.m. with a second tee time at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Valley
Country Club in Little Rock. Proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships for
athletes at Ouachita.
“Each year it has been great to see alumni and friends of Ouachita gather for a fun
day of golf, good food, old friends and competition,” said Nicole Herndon, an OBU
development officer and coordinator of this year’s event.
With more than 400 Ouachita students involved in its growing NCAA Division II athletics
program, Herndon said the main objective of the event is to raise money for scholarships
and related athletic and academic financial expenses.
Brett Rogers, president of Capital Business Machines, Inc., serves as chairman for
this year’s event. Rogers is a 1990 graduate of Ouachita and has served on the event
planning committee each year since the event began.
“Ouachita is a small, private institution that does not receive funding like public
institutions,” said Rogers. “Students who receive scholarships get a first rate education
who otherwise might not have that opportunity.”
There are currently 34 teams registered for the event. Since its inception, the tournament
has raised nearly $200,000 toward scholarships.
In addition to raising money, “it has also become a good networking tool for men and
women who play in the tournament,” Herndon said. “The tournament provides a way to
friend-raise as well as fund-raise.”
The lead sponsors for this year’s event include Capital Business Machines, Legacy
Termite and Pest Control, Inc. and Bank of America/Merrill Lynch.
