Heart of Texas Bowl cancelled due to inclement weather
December 05, 2013 - OBU News Bureau
The Ouachita Baptist University Athletic Department announced today that the Heart
of Texas Bowl scheduled for this Saturday, Dec. 7, has been cancelled due to inclement
weather and the potential of hazardous travel conditions.
With the incoming front that is forecast to produce frozen precipitation, including
up to an inch of ice accumulation statewide, Ouachita Baptist Athletic Director David
Sharp said he feels the decision is in the best interest of players, families and
fans.
“With the severe winter weather forecast in Arkansas and Texas over the next two days,
we feel that the safety of the Ouachita community is our No. 1 priority,” Sharp said.
“While we are disappointed that our players will not get the chance to play against
a quality opponent like Tarleton State, we are certainly pleased for the invitation
from the Heart of Texas bowl committee. However, we have to think in the best interest
of our student-athletes.”
Head Coach Todd Knight echoed the program’s concern for safety of the student-athletes.
“We support the decision,” said Coach Knight, “and hold the safety of our players,
coaches, trainers and staff as our highest priority. We hate that our seniors and
players will miss out on this opportunity after the weeks of preparation and hard
work they’ve put in.”
The winter weather has also forced the postponement of the inaugural Live United Bowl
in Texarkana, Ark., on the same day, as well as state high school playoff games in
Arkansas and Texas.
