Ouachita honors 357 graduates in largest graduating class in 30 years

Ouachita honors 357 graduates in largest graduating class in 30 years.May 12, 2014 - OBU News Bureau

Ouachita Baptist University President Rex M. Horne, Jr. honored Ouachita’s largest graduating class since the early 1980s at the university’s May 10 commencement ceremony.

“There’s much equity in the name of Ouachita,” Horne said. “For 128 years now, young adults like these have come to this very place and have been challenged to love God and to love learning.

“Thank you students for choosing to be a part of Ouachita for your college experience, your university experience,” Horne added, “and I want to congratulate you all, class of 2014.”

University officials recognized a total of 357 graduates, including 294 Bachelor of Arts degrees, 51 Bachelor of Science degrees, 13 Bachelor of Music degrees and two Bachelor of Music Education degrees. The Saturday morning service was held on the lawn of Ouachita’s historic Cone-Bottoms Hall.

“This is a visual reminder of our purpose at Ouachita as we are surrounded by academic buildings and Berry Chapel is right here beside us,” Horne said. “It reminds us that we are a great university and that we are unapologetically Christian.”

Ouachita’s 2014 graduating class featured 166 honor graduates, including 36 who graduated summa cum laude with a grade point average of 3.95 or higher, 69 who graduated magna cum laude (3.75 GPA) and 61 who graduated cum laude (3.5 GPA). University officials also recognized 18 graduates who completed Ouachita’s Carl Goodson Honors Program and 47 members of Alpha Chi national honor society.

“You do earn the degree that you’re being awarded today,” Horne noted. “Because of that I know that you all will bring appreciation and accolades upon the name of Ouachita, even from people who do not know anything about Ouachita yet. … But they’re going to know you and see how you impact people and how you make a difference in whatever the Lord leads you to do. And because of that, Ouachita will have a part in that and you’ll bring great credit to this name, Ouachita Baptist University.”

Dr. Scott Duvall, J.C. and Mae Fuller Professor of Biblical Studies, and Dr. Raouf Halaby, professor of Art and Design and English, served as commencement marshals. Honorary marshals were retiring faculty members Dr. Ouida Keck, Addie Mae Maddox Professor of Music, and Dr. Robert Webster, professor of accounting and holder of the George Young Chair of Business.

During the ceremony, Senior Class President Garet West, a mass communications major from Bolivar, Mo., led the invocation. Scripture reading was led by four students:  Kyle Fischer, a Christian studies and Biblical languages major from Texarkana, Texas; Elise Holman, a political science, Christian media/communications and mass communications major from Berryville, Ark.; Chris Redmon, a Christian studies, Biblical languages and philosophy major from Little Rock; and Hunter Threadgill, a philosophy and psychology major from Cordova, Tenn. Three graduates were recognized for completing Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) requirements to be named Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army: Evan Malcolm, Oscar Mendoza and Daniel Searles. Gene Whisenhunt, chair of the Ouachita Board of Trustees, led the closing prayer of dedication.

Ouachita Baptist University, a leading liberal arts university, is ranked nationally among “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report and Forbes magazines. Founded in Arkadelphia in 1886, Ouachita seeks to foster a love of God and a love of learning in a Christ-centered learning community.
