Ouachita to host journalists Philip and Karen Martin April 1

March 18, 2015 - Lauren Scarbrough

Journalists Philip and Karen Martin will present a panel on film and writing at Ouachita Baptist University on Wednesday, April 1, at 2 p.m. in Lile Hall, room 321, on Ouachita’s campus. The event is free and open to the public.

“These are two acclaimed professionals whose expertise will no doubt be a great treat for our students and faculty,” said Dr. Raouf Halaby, coordinator for the event and professor of English and Art and Design at OBU.

The Martins will discuss their journeys as writers and journalists and also will include a question and answer session. A reception will follow at 3:30 p.m.

“I always open the Sunday paper with eagerness, owing primarily to knowing that Philip Martin will be present in it,” said Dr. Johnny Wink, Betty Burton Peck Professor of English at Ouachita. “Even though April 1 is going to be a Wednesday afternoon, it is as if it will be a Sunday morning for me because it will bring with it the promise of Philip Martin.”

Philip Martin writes for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette as MovieStyle editor and columnist, and Karen Martin serves as associate editor of the Perspective section. He has worked as a sports editor and an investigative reporter, an alternative newspaper editor and a movie critic. She previously has worked as an editor for Arkansas Business Publishing Group, as a publications specialist for the Arkansas Lottery Scholarship and as an editor for multiple sections in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

“Rarely do college students have the opportunity to meet film critics and editors in a joint setting,” Halaby said. “I urge the university and the local communities to take advantage of this enriching experience.”

The Martins also will speak in the OBU at Sundance class that day. For more information about their visit, contact Dr. Raouf Halaby at [email protected] or (870) 245-5564.
