Ouachita Baptist University’s Hammons Gallery in Mabee Fine Arts Center will feature
the OBU Art Club’s annual Student Juried Art Exhibit from Monday, April 17, through
Tuesday, April 25. The exhibit is free and open to the public, and winners will be
announced at a reception Monday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in the gallery.
“The exhibit was started as a way for students – art majors or not – to have their
work professionally judged and displayed,” said former Art Club President Chad Satchell,
a junior graphic design major from Frisco, Texas.
“We see it as a valuable opportunity for students to share their hard work with the
campus and the community,” added Summer Bruch, associate professor of Art and Design.
“We have some very talented students on campus, and I hope everyone drops by the show
to see their accomplishments.”
There are a variety of pieces that will be on display in this year’s exhibit, such
as paintings, photographs, sculptures, fabrics and graphic design. Each year, a professional
artist judges the art pieces and decides what will be featured in the final show and
select first, second and third place winners. The Art Club will choose other awards,
as well.
This year’s juror is Aaron Calvert, professor of art at Henderson State University,
where he teaches all levels of ceramics classes and directs the Russell Fine Arts
Gallery. Raised in northern Ohio, Calvert earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
in crafts from Kent State University and his Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics
from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Calvert continues to be active in the field
ceramics by maintaining a growing list of exhibitions, conducting lectures and offering
workshops. He has received numerous recognitions, and his work is included in permanent
collections as far away as Jindezhen, China.
“The exhibit showcases student art for other students, faculty and people in the community,”
said Art Club President Lexie Hoggard, a sophomore graphic design and mass communication
major from Roland, Ark. “The coolest thing is seeing art from people you didn’t know
were talented in art. Biology, psychology, elementary education and other majors submit
art to this exhibit.”
Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m.-5p.m. weekdays. For more information, contact the
School of Fine Arts at (870) 245-5129.
