Ouachita Wind Ensemble to present fall concert on Oct. 30

Ouachita Wind Ensemble to present fall concert on Oct. 30.October 19, 2017 - Rachel Bruton

The Ouachita Baptist University Wind Ensemble will perform on Monday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held in Jones Performing Arts Center on Ouachita’s campus. This concert is free and open to the public.

“I’ve most enjoyed making music with my friends, the students,” said Dr. Craig Hamilton, Ouachita’s Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of bands. “I hope enjoy the music. I hope they appreciate the talent and time that it takes to present this concert. I hope it takes them on a journey – maybe to escape reality for a moment.”

“The connections and friendships that I’ve made through being in Wind Ensemble are things that I will cherish forever,” said Ashley Lovely, a senior music education major from Queen City, Texas, who plays clarinet in the ensemble. “I’ve learned so much through this experience and there’s something about making music with others that is very special to me.”

The concert will begin with “A Celebration Overture” by Bruce Broughton, “Illyrian Dances” by Guy Woolfenden, “Pacem, A Hymn for Peace” by Robert Spittal, “Bugs” by Roger Cichy, “Fantasy on American Folk Songs” by Dwayne Milburn and “Saddle Up!” by Stephen Hill.

“Saddle Up!” was written specifically for the Ouachita Wind Ensemble by Stephen Hill, a Ouachita graduate. Hill currently lives in California as a music educator and composer.

The concert will conclude with Maurice Johnstone’s arrangement of “English Dances for Band, set 1” by Malcolm Arnold.

The concert also will be livestreamed at www.obu.edu/band. For a full list of students in the Wind Ensemble, visit www.obu.edu/news. For more information, contact Dr. Craig Hamilton at [email protected] or (870) 245-5137.
