Ouachita Concert Choir to perform spring concert May 1

News graphicApril 13, 2018 - Jessica Williamson

Ouachita Baptist University’s Concert Choir will perform its annual spring concert Tuesday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall on Ouachita’s campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

The theme of the concert is “An Evening of Glorias.” It will feature the “Gloria” text set by three composers: Antonio Vivaldi, Randall Alan Bass and John Rutter. Esther Atkinson, a senior musical theatre major from Rogers, Ark., will be the featured soloist in the Vivaldi selection.

“Getting to finish off my senior year with singing such a great work by a fantastic composer with a dedicated and hardworking choir behind me is such an honor,” Atkinson said. “It’ll be a memory that I treasure forever.”

“This is an unusual concert in which the text is the same for all three works, but the music is vastly different,” said Dr. Gary Gerber, director of the choir and dean of Ouachita’s School of Fine Arts. “It is interesting to see how the composers interpreted the Gloria text and composed their music. The students have enjoyed learning these works and are excited about presenting them at the concert.”

The choir will be accompanied by organist Bart Morrison and pianist Glenda Aldridge.
