Ouachita confers degrees on 360 students during May 14 Commencement

- Felley LawsonOuachita Baptist University conferred degrees on 360 graduates during its 135th Spring Commencement held Saturday, May 14, on the front lawn of Cone-Bottoms Hall. Graduates received Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science degrees, as well as post-baccalaureate certificates for Dietetic Internship.
Dr. Ben Sells, Ouachita president, led Commencement exercises and delivered the Commencement address, in keeping with Ouachita tradition. He recalled the preparation involved in ensuring that Ouachita would be one of the few universities to offer students a fully in-person education during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years.

“In this effort to provide the typical in the least typical of times, we called on our seniors—the only class who remembered a year without COVID—to restore and to revive the traditions that make Ouachita, Ouachita,” Sells said. “You, our seniors, rose to the occasion, and I will forever be grateful for you, for the leadership you demonstrated and the example you set.”
He added, “My prayer for you is taken from Ephesians 3:17-19, which reads, ‘And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.’”

Of this year’s 162 honor graduates, 32 graduated summa cum laude with a grade point average of 3.95 or higher; and 17 of those graduated with a 4.0 GPA. There were 63 magna cum laude graduates (3.75 GPA); and 67 who graduated cum laude (3.5 GPA).
Candidates for graduation were presented by Dr. Stan Poole, Ouachita’s vice president for academic affairs, who noted two significant milestones for the university.

Poole also noted that graduates who received a Master of Science degree in applied behavior analysis are Ouachita’s first master’s degree recipients since 1991. This inaugural cohort of ABA graduates began their program in May 2020 and completed degree requirements in August 2021.
Dr. Jim Files, associate professor of accounting and chair of the University Committee, served as Commencement marshal. Honorary marshals were retiring faculty members Dr. Glenda Secrest, professor emerita of music; Dr. Jon Secrest, professor emeritus of music; Dr. Amy Sonheim, professor emerita of English; and Dr. Doug Sonheim, professor emeritus of English.

Senior Class President Bennett Hasley, a biology major from Fort Smith, Ark., delivered the invocation. Scripture was read by Noah McCallum, a Christian studies/Biblical studies & theology major from Jonesboro, Ark.; Lucas McCann, a Christian studies/Biblical studies & theology and Christian ministry double major from Camden, Ark.; Hope White, a community & family services major from Conway, Ark.; and Jael Winterholter, a Christian studies/Biblical studies & theology major from Fort Wayne, Ind. These students graduated with the highest grade point averages in the Pruet School of Christian Studies.
During his address, Sells challenged graduates to consider that “What has gotten you to where you are today has been considerable, but it may not be enough to get you to where you want to go.”

Sells also conferred degrees upon the graduates and recognized three who were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army: Thomas Brenton, a kinesiology & leisure studies/recreation & sports administration major from Bryant, Ark.; Madelyn Filla, a psychology and sociology major from Tyler, Texas; and Paul Harwood, a biology major from Van Buren, Ark.
