Greater love hath no man than this

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Students walking on campusDecember 25, 2024 - Dr. Lewis Shepherd

On Monday, Jan. 20, America and nations around the world will pause to recognize the 96th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which occurred Jan. 15. There are many things that can be said about the late Dr. King, more than likely about his being a role model of a servant leader, which is extremely evident through his life’s work.

But the concept that stands out most is his affirmation of love in America and around the world. During his lifetime, Dr. King was known for hundreds of memorable quotes, but those on love are particularly poignant and reflect his feelings on unity and concern for others.

There are a couple which validate those concerns:

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." When we love each other, it has the potential to change the perspective of our feelings for others.

Dr. King spoke of this change with these words, “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend." Dr. King lived and died on behalf of those who were disenfranchised and whose voices were unheard. He understood and felt the brunt of the words of John who said this about Jesus, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

A couple of years ago, I read where one member of the King family mentioned that when their father died, he was one of the most hated men in America. And now, years after his death, he is one of the most beloved people in the world. It has been said that “Time brings about a change,” and it really does. But each of us must be willing to make change a priority in our hearts. It is love that has the capacity to do that.
