A Weekly Word: Job 23:10-11

January 01, 2020

How do you respond to adversity? Maybe it’s a conflict in a relationship, or financial difficulties, or uncertainty about the future. And maybe it’s something completely beyond your control. We all face difficulties in our lives that may leave us feeling overwhelmed and at times even defeated.

Job was no stranger to difficult circumstances. He lost his children and significant wealth. His friends accused him of wrongdoing. Even his wife turned on him and told him to curse God. But Job maintained his integrity. In the midst of absolute despair, he did not turn from his faith, and his story is preserved as a testimony to God’s sovereignty.

But he knows the way that I take;
when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
My feet have closely followed his steps;
I have kept to his way without turning aside.

Job 23:10-11

What an example for us. What if we could more fully trust in His righteousness? What if, in the midst of trials, we find encouragement in knowing that He is faithful? The difficulty may not go away, but we can find hope in knowing that He is fair, and good, and merciful – even as the world around us may offer ridicule and cynicism.

How about you? Are you facing a difficult circumstance? If you’re feeling overwhelmed, turn your cares over to Him (1 Peter 5:7), persevere in your pursuit of His righteousness (Gal 6:9) and know that He can work it all out for good (Rom 8:28). You can trust Him. His justice is perfect. And so is His love.
