A Weekly Word: John 14:6
January 01, 2020
In the scripture passage for this week (John 14:6) Jesus responds to Thomas’ question “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way.” Jesus answers the question very clearly and distinctly when he says, “I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
I know in my own life there have been numerous times when I have asked that question in some variation as I faced life’s uncertainties. What confidence we can have in taking Jesus at His word and trusting him when our pathway is unclear, our minds are full of doubts, and our hope is waning.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6
A couple of thoughts jump out of this verse at me. One, Jesus starts his response with “I am” just like when God spoke to Moses from the burning bush. Jesus is making it clear that He transcends time. He is not just “the way, the truth and the life” for the present. He has always been and always will be “the way, the truth and the life.” Second, in today’s world where there seem to be so many paths that point to fulfillment and happiness His statement makes it clear there is no other way. Following Him is not just one of many options that we can chose from to find our way, know truth and enjoy life. Third, He states that knowing Him allows us to know the Father. How wonderful for God to reveal Himself to us in human form.
As we approach the Christmas season the last part of this scripture reminds us that
God sent His son to be born in a stable, to live among us, to be crucified, to be
resurrected and one day to return so that we can experience God’s grace and love in
its fullness. He wants us to know Him!
