Ouachita Stories

To the Class of Twenty-fun

January 01, 2020

I’m going to go ahead and guess that your mom probably sent this to you in a link on Facebook along with articles on what all you can cook in a college dorm microwave (more than you would think FYI) and how to fit your entire life into the confines of four cinder-blocked walls. Basically, I am assuming you are a little over the “college advice” articles. Hey. Stick around. I am going to make reading this one worth your time.

First off, let me just tell you that we’re totally LIT that you are at Ouachita. You made the absolute best decision. So without further ado, let’s have a little talk about the very BEST ways to make freshman year one you will never forget.

  1. Find a church! There are some incredible churches in Arkadelphia and the surrounding area. Wherever you choose to go, get plugged in so you can be poured in to!

  2. Make Arkadelphia your home. It’s small. We’re lucky to have a Waffle House. I have heard it all. BUT, if you will branch out and do a little adventuring, you sure can make some memories in the dirty Delph. (Atwood’s has real live baby chicks and Violet Fields has a homemade bakery – you’re welcome).

  3. Try and get to know upperclassmen. We have some COOL people at Ouachita. Don’t miss out on some awesome friendships. If you’re lucky, they will invite you to their apartment and cook you dinner! (Thanks, Natalie Bingaman and Talor Tartaglia.)

  4. Hit up DeGray Lake for some of the most breathtaking sunsets you have ever experienced. Perfect addition to that college Instagram aesthetic you’re aiming for, amirite? Bring your hammock and a Frisbee while you’re at it. Also, they have grills out there. If anyone ever wants to cook up some burgers, let me know.

  5. The best way to make friends is to bust in their dorm on your first night. (Results may vary, but that is how I made my very best friends. Shout out to the EV sisters.)

Let me close by saying the community here is truly unmatched. Never have I been in a place where I felt so fully known and fully loved. Jesus sure does love Ouachita Baptist. I like to think he’s a #TigerForLife too. Make your first year the very best!
