Education Alumni Profiles: Catie Bennett ('13)

January 01, 2020
"One of the most unique things about the Education program is the diverse and immense amount of hands-on and in-classroom experiences we get. The professors are incredible and taught us with the same passion and energy that they taught their classrooms."

Catie Bennett:

  • Class of 2013

  • BA Early Childhood Education - Ouachita Baptist University

  • MSE in Educational Leadership and Principal Certification - SMU

  • 5th Grade—Self Contained and Math Departmentalized  - Motley Elementary and Hanby Elementary, Mesquite, TX

  • Mesquite ISD First Class Teacher Award, Mesquite ISD Leadership Academy

Catie Bennett chose OBU after hearing about both of her parents’ college experiences at OBU. She immediately was attracted to the small campus and the unique culture.

After graduating from OBU, Catie moved to Dallas, TX and began teaching 5th grade at Motley Elementary. After teaching for 2 years, she decided to pursue her Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and earned her principal certification from SMU. Her goal is to become an administrator in the future.

When thinking of her favorite OBU Education Program memory, Catie recalls one of her elementary education professors sprinkling glitter all over her classroom on St. Patrick’s Day to spark their imagination and learning.

Another one of her favorite OBU Education experience was travelling to Little Rock for classroom observations and to tour the Little Rock Central High Historic Museum,  “If you know our professors, then you will know that we had to stop at Sonic on our way back from observations!”

Looking back over her years of teaching, Catie’s favorite P-12 classroom memory is about one of her past students. “In my 2nd year of teaching I had an incredibly challenging student. I  worked really hard to build a relationship with her. She made progress but moved to another school around spring

break of that year, I continued to stay in touch with her and visited her at her new school. At the end of the year she came back to see me, on her own, and told me she passed her state assessments. We still stay in touch and she is doing very well!”

Catie knows that being an educator is what she has been called to do. “I really am thankful every day for my experiences at Ouachita and the passion and experience all of my professors imparted on me! Teaching is one of the most challenging yet rewarding careers!“

“Never give up. Never stop learning. Don’t be afraid to try new things!”

Thank you, Catie Bennett, for being a life changing educator!
