Tiger Serve Day Leadership Team prepares with diligence and prayer

January 01, 2020

Most Ouachitonians and Arkadelphia residents are familiar with Tiger Serve Day, the semi-annual community service blitz that draws hundreds of OBU student, faculty and staff volunteers to complete hundreds of projects each year. However, many may not know that behind the scenes, the event is largely student-led.

While the staff of the Elrod Center for Family and Community, which hosts the event, directs the team, much of the leg work is completed by a 20 to 25-member student leadership team. This team divides into subcommittees to tackle details related to logistics, projects, publicity and volunteer teams. These student leaders are selected from across campus and represent a variety of majors and backgrounds, but they all share a common passion for service.

“One of the powerful operational aspects of making Tiger Serve Day a successful event is the hard work done by the staff of the Elrod Center and the leadership team ahead of time,” said Ian Cosh, vice president for community and international engagement. “You have to have leaders who create capacity to serve others by preparing the wider landscape of service. If it were not for the diligent preparation by the TDS leadership team we would not be able to facilitate the work of the larger group.”

From putting together the artwork promoting the event to visiting every single project site before the day of service to intentionally taking time to pray for every single individual by name that will either serve or be served, the leadership team wears many hats. This dedicated group seeks to cater to the needs of the community and to adequately equip the volunteers with the tools they need to serve well – both physically and spiritually.

“A huge part of Tiger Serve Day that wasn’t revealed to me until I was on the leadership team is how much prayer goes into the short four hours that students spend getting to serve our community,” said Staci Gore, a senior business administration major from Springdale, Ark. “Prayers for the day, the teams, the logistics, matching the teams with the right projects – as well as for the people we will be serving, that they would receive a gospel impact on their lives because of students’ willingness to serve.”

It is the heart of the TSD leadership team that Jesus is made known this Saturday as students head into the streets to serve this community. Whether you have signed up to serve already, are being served this Saturday or even if you are still on the fence about getting a team together, know that the leadership team has carefully prayed for you.

We have been praying individually and corporately for weeks that Jesus is proclaimed in both word and action as we send students to be His hands and feet this Saturday, and we hope that you join us.
