It's the most wonderful time of the year: Christmas at Ouachita

January 01, 2020

Okay, everyone! Sing it with me: It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And at Ouachita, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the semester. There is a chill in the air, people don their ugly Christmas sweaters, and colorful lights decorate the campus.

Oh – and all the Christmas events! These events will help you get into the Christmas spirit in no time. Here are a few to help you celebrate.

Speechie Christmas Tree Lighting • Thursday, Nov. 30, 10:30 p.m.

The Speechies celebrate the season by hosting their annual tree lighting party for all of campus on Nov. 30. Held near the International Flag Plaza, enjoy hot chocolate while the campus tree is lit up. Come after Refuge to support the Speechies and join in on the fun!

A Festival of Christmas • Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1-2, 7:30 p.m.

Come celebrate with Concert Choir, Ouachita Singers, Ouachita Sounds and Women’s Chorus as they sing your favorite Christmas songs. A Festival of Christmas will definitely set the tone for the rest of your holiday season. The concert takes place Dec. 1 & 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $12 each, and you can get them at www.obu.edu/boxoffice. OBU students get one free ticket each, so there’s no reason not to go.

Christmas Chapel • Tuesday, Dec. 5, 10 a.m.

One of my favorite chapel services is the Christmas chapel. The annual performance by Ouachita’s Concert Band will bring Christmas cheer to your heart. Christmas Chapel is led by Dr. Craig Hamilton and will be Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center. Don’t miss it!

A Service of Lessons & Carols • Tuesday, Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m.

A Service of Lessons & Carols is formatted like traditional Christmas services dating back to the late 1800s. It features a series of nine scripture readings that range from Genesis to John and eleven carols, a mix of performances by Ouachita Singers, Women’s Chorus and Handbell Ringers and congregational singing. The service will be held Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall.

CAB Christmas Party • Tuesday, Dec. 5, 8:30 p.m.

Join CAB in Evans Student Center for a Christmas celebration with the rest of your Ouachita family. There are rumors of crafts, cookie decorating and gingerbread house construction, but it’s also fun just to chill in the coffeehouse with your friends. The party will be Dec. 5 at 8:30.

Christmas Climbing • Friday, Dec. 8, 8 p.m.

Ouachita’s Climbing Center will be open for a night of Christmas cheer. It will be a festive time of climbing, eating Christmas treats and drinking hot drinks. There may also be an exciting competition of Crate Stacking. Wear your favorite Christmas sweater and get ready for some fun! The event will be Dec. 8 and starts at 8 p.m. It’s free, and Christmas cheer is required!

If these events aren’t enough to satisfy your Christmas cheer, no worries! Ouachita has even more to offer this season:

  • On Monday, Dec. 4, at 7:30, the Steel Drum Concert will be held in McBeth Recital Hall. Enjoy a night of Caribbean music by the only active steel band in Arkansas!

  • On Thursday and Friday, Dec. 7 & 8, at 7:30, the One-Act Play Festival will be held in Verser Theatre. Come for one or stay for them all!

  • Make sure to cheer on the Tigers at their home basketball games on Dec. 2, 7, 9 and 15. Let’s #filltheBill!

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope you enjoy this season with your friends and family. God bless!
