Ouachita to host percussionist Daniel Smithiger and oboist Dawn Striker-Roberts Oct. 22

Daniel Smithiger headshotOuachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host percussionist Daniel Smithiger and oboist Dawn Striker-Roberts on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the university’s 2019-2020 Guest Artist Series. The performance, to be held in McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center, is free and open to the public.

“Both performers teach at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), just across the river from St. Louis,” said Dr. Ryan Lewis, associate professor of music at Ouachita. “They will be on a tour performing music for percussion and oboe, which is an unusual combination, but one that I am sure will result in a unique and enjoyable concert!”

Smithiger and Striker-Roberts will open the concert with a performance of Astor Piazzolla’s “Oblivion.” Striker-Roberts will then perform Benjamin Britten’s “Six Metamorphoses After Ovid, followed by Smithiger performing Dave Samuels’ “Footpath.” Next, the duo will perform together Charles Sayre’s “Madrugada.To conclude the concert, Smithiger will perform Dave Samuels and David Friedman’s “Carousel” with Lewis and Wilhelm Killmayer’s “Tre Danzealongside Striker-Roberts.

Dawn Striker-RobertsSmithiger is instructor of percussion and director of basketball bands at SIUE. He has performed with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Dubuque Symphony, Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, Mesa Symphony, Midland-Odessa Symphony, San Angelo Symphony, St. Louis Brass Band, St. Louis Philharmonic, St. Louis Wind Symphony and Tucson Symphony. He has taught and performed in Austria, Canada, England, France, Germany and Taiwan, as well as across the U.S. Smithiger also is a Black Swamp Percussion artist and educator, and he serves as both a coordinator and a judge for the Black Swamp Percussion Ensemble Showcase and Solo Multiple Percussion Showcase.

Striker-Roberts teaches oboe at SIUE, Saint Louis University and McKendree University. She began her professional career as an oboist in the United States Air Force Band of the West. As part of the Air Force Band’s educational outreach, Striker-Roberts taught masterclasses to high school and college oboe students and gave presentations at two International Double Reed Society conferences, ClarinetFest and the International Flute Convention. Striker-Roberts earned a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Tennessee Tech University and a master’s degree in performance from San Diego State University.
