October 07, 2019 - Madison Cresswell
Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host percussionist Daniel Smithiger and oboist Dawn Striker-Roberts on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the university’s 2019-2020 Guest Artist Series. The performance, to be held in McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center, is free and open to the public.
“Both performers teach at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), just across
the river from St. Louis,” said Dr. Ryan Lewis, associate professor of music at Ouachita.
“They will be on a tour performing music for percussion and oboe, which is an unusual combination, but one
that I am sure will result in a unique and enjoyable concert!”
Smithiger and Striker-Roberts will open the concert with a performance of Astor Piazzolla’s
“Oblivion.” Striker-Roberts will then perform Benjamin Britten’s “Six Metamorphoses
After Ovid,” followed by Smithiger performing Dave Samuels’ “Footpath.” Next, the duo will perform
together Charles Sayre’s “Madrugada.” To conclude the concert, Smithiger will perform Dave Samuels and David Friedman’s
“Carousel” with Lewis and Wilhelm Killmayer’s “Tre Danze” alongside Striker-Roberts.
Smithiger is instructor of percussion and director of basketball bands at SIUE. He
has performed with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Dubuque Symphony, Flagstaff Symphony
Orchestra, Mesa Symphony, Midland-Odessa Symphony, San Angelo Symphony, St. Louis
Brass Band, St. Louis Philharmonic, St. Louis Wind Symphony and Tucson Symphony. He
has taught and performed in Austria, Canada, England, France, Germany and Taiwan,
as well as across the U.S. Smithiger also is a Black Swamp Percussion artist and educator,
and he serves as both a coordinator and a judge for the Black Swamp Percussion Ensemble
Showcase and Solo Multiple Percussion Showcase.
Striker-Roberts teaches oboe at SIUE, Saint Louis University and McKendree University.
She began her professional career as an oboist in the United States Air Force Band
of the West. As part of the Air Force Band’s educational outreach, Striker-Roberts
