Ouachita’s Division of Music to present Chamber Winds Concert on Oct. 21
October 07, 2019 - Ashly Stracener
Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will present its fall Chamber Winds
Concert on Monday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall, located in Mabee
Fine Arts Center. The concert will be free and open to the public.
“The Chamber Winds program is an opportunity for our Wind Ensemble students to study
and perform chamber music – music for smaller instrumentation than the full Wind Ensemble,”
said Dr. Craig Hamilton, Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of the
ensemble. “The audience will enjoy a varied concert of timbre combinations and styles.
“Our literature for the concert spans from the 16th century to the 21st century,” Hamilton added.
The evening’s program will include “Bells” by Ian McDougall, “Little Symphony for
Winds” by Franz Schubert and arranged by Verne Reynolds, “Susato Suite” by Tylman
Susato and arranged by John Iveson, “Premier Quatuor, Op. 53” by Jean Baptiste Singelée
and “An American Tapestry” by Daniel Kallman.
“One of the biggest reasons I enjoy playing in the Chamber Winds Concert is because
everyone is usually one to a part, which means that everyone is a soloist,” said Ashlynne
Turner, a senior instrumental music education major from Burleson, Texas, on clarinet.
“I believe that everyone would benefit from going to this concert because it’s an
opportunity to hear the individual players more clearly than you would in a big band
setting.”
“Chamber music is a different beast than what you hear at a large ensemble concert,”
said Abby Morse, a senior English major from Georgetown, Texas, on bassoon. “It’s
a great opportunity to discover what each instrument offers and get a taste for a
kind of music you may not have had the opportunity to just rest and enjoy before the
show.”
