Chamber Winds at Ouachita Baptist UniversityMarch 22, 2023 - Emma Dennis

The Division of Music in Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will present its Chamber Winds spring concert Tuesday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

“I love hearing our students have the opportunity to perform in smaller chamber ensembles,” said Dr. Caroline Taylor, dean of the School of Fine Arts and professor of music at Ouachita. “It gives them wonderful experience working independently and playing music written specifically for their groups.”

Directed by Dr. Carlos Feller, assistant professor of music, the Flute Choir will perform “Twilight” by Herman Beeftink, “The Cat’s Pajamas” by Nicole Chamberlain and “Serenova” by choir member Brailee Price, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Pineville, La. The Low Brass Choir, under the direction of Dr. Austin Motley, assistant professor of music, will perform Motley’s arrangement of “God is So Good” and “Bah, Bah, Baaah,” arranged by Brian Sadler.

Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Allegro” and “Gavotte en Rondeau” by Jean-Francois Dandrieu will be performed by the Clarinet Ensemble. The Saxophone Quartet will perform “Into the Fire” by Jenna Barnes, a junior music industry major from Sheridan, Ark.

“Since I was little, I’ve dreamed about having a piece performed that I wrote. It’s amazing to think it’s finally happening,” Barnes said. “I love that my music brings enjoyment to people.”

She added, “In the four months that it took me to write ‘Into The Fire,’ I have learned to use my imagination more than I ever thought possible. This has and will transfer to every part of my life.”

Taylor will conduct the Clarinet Ensemble and Saxophone Quartet; she will perform with the quartet, as well.

Clarinet Ensemble and Saxophone Quartet members will combine to form the Single Reed Ensemble, performing “Shenandoah,” arranged by Harley Rex, and “Allegro” from Three Dances by Guy Woolfenden.

The concert will be livestreamed at livestream.com/obu. For more information, contact Dr. Caroline Taylor at [email protected] or (870) 245-5139.
