Tiger Serve Day provides opportunities to serve community
April 01, 2009 - Emory Jacobs
Ouachita Baptist University will hold its community-wide service project known as Tiger Serve Day on Saturday, April 4.
Tiger Serve Day (TSD) provides Ouachita students, faculty and staff an opportunity to make a difference in the community outside of campus while bringing the campus community closer together as a whole. Volunteers assemble as teams and are given specific community service assignments. On Saturday morning those teams will meet at the Ben M. Elrod Center for Family and Community for breakfast and then disperse to their various service locations. After they have completed their service projects, they will meet in the Jones Performing Arts Center parking lot for lunch and a reflection of their experiences.
“I believe Tiger Serve Day does as much for our campus as it does the community of Arkadelphia,” said Matt Morrison, a member of TSD leadership and a senior Christian and Biblical studies major from Plano, Texas. “It brings us together as a student body.
“This semester we have focused on the idea that service enables us to get over ourselves through seeking to meet the needs of others,” he added. “My hope is that this weekend goes far beyond a morning of service and encourages students to build relationships with those in need on a regular basis.”
This semester, TSD leaders are focusing on a specific demographic in the Arkadelphia community.
“One of the goals of the leadership team this semester was to try to serve people we have not served in the past with specific focus on senior citizens, the disabled and the poor,” said Cami Jones, a TSD leader and a senior early childhood education major from Mansfield, Texas. “God has provided us with so many new opportunities to serve this community, and I can’t wait to see what He does on Saturday.”
Tiger Serve Day will kick off at 8:30 a.m. in the Jones Performing Arts Center parking lot in front of the Elrod Center. For more information or to sign up, go to www.obu.edu/serve.
