Ouachita hosts TRIO Family Day for prospective students Oct. 24

October 22, 2009 - Rebecca Stone

Ouachita Baptist University’s TRIO Program will host the annual TRIO Family Day Saturday, Oct. 24. Activities for prospective high school students and their families will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 12 noon.

Brenda Bradley-Philson, Ouachita’s associate TRIO director, said, “The TRIO day is hosted to bring participants from the public schools and their families to campus to provide academic and financial aid information to the students served through the outreach programs of Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound.”

Both of these programs were part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society Program” instituted in the mid-1960s. Educational Talent Search is a program that is designed to identify promising students and Upward Bound prepares these students to take on college level work.  Ouachita’s TRIO Program also offers Student Support Services that is meant to ensure college retention and graduation.

TRIO family day will begin with a breakfast for participants and will include informative sessions as well as door prizes.  At the end of the day participants are invited to attend the OBU football game at 1:30 p.m. where the Tigers will take on the Southwest Baptist Bearcats.

Attendance to TRIO Family Day is free of charge.
