Ouachita hosts Arkansas Saxophone Quartet in guest recital

January 26, 2010 - Rebecca Stone

Ouachita Baptist University will host the Arkansas Saxophone Quartet in a guest recital Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Ouachita’s McBeth Recital Hall.

The Arkansas Saxophone Quartet was formed in the fall of 2007 as an ensemble adept at all styles of chamber music ranging from transcriptions to avant-garde contemporary music.

The quartet will begin with an arrangement by Andrew Charlton of J. S. Bach’s “Prelude from Partita No. 3 for violin.” They will then perform Alfred Desenclos’ “Quatuor” and Neil Flory’s “Interchangeable Identities.” The recital will conclude with Jacob Ter Veldhuis’ “Heartbreakers” and Sonny Burnette’s “When Saxophonists Collide.”

Members of the quartet include: Andy Wen, soprano saxophone and assistant professor at the University of Arkansas Little Rock; Caroline Taylor, alto saxophone and professor of music at Ouachita Baptist University; Brent Bristow, tenor saxophone and director of bands and professor of saxophone at Arkansas State University-Beebe; and Jackie Lamar, baritone saxophone and professor of music at the University of Central Arkansas.

In 2009-2010, the Arkansas Saxophone Quartet has performed at the AMEA conference in Conway, Ark.; the University of Arkansas Little Rock; Arkansas State University-Beebe; and the United States Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Fairfax, Va. They also plan to perform at the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference in Athens, Ga., in March.

The guest recital is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, contact Caroline Taylor at [email protected] or (870) 245-5139.
