OBU Division of Music to host Dr. David Cartledge in lecture and recital Jan. 29

January 27, 2010 - OBU News Bureau

Ouachita Baptist University will host Dr. David Cartledge in a lecture and recital on Friday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. He will be playing and discussing Franz Liszt’s “Piano Sonata in B” in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall on Ouachita’s campus.

“It is an important work in the romantic piano literature,” said Dr. Cai Lei, Ouachita professor of music, “both technically challenging and musically profound.” He encouraged fans of classical music especially to attend.

Cartledge currently serves as assistant professor at Indiana University in the Jacobs School of Music where he teaches a comprehensive history of piano music to postgraduate pianists. He is a frequent faculty member of the Indiana University Piano Academy, a summer residential program for talented young pianists, and he is regularly in demand to lead masterclasses. Cartledge is a native of Australia and a graduate of the Australian National University in Canberra. He came to the U.S. in 1992 to begin his graduate studies at Indiana University, where he earned both his master's degree and his doctorate under György Sebok, Béla Síki, Christopher Elton and John Luxton.

Cartledge has performed in Australia, Great Britain and the U.S., with an extensive performance background as a soloist, chamber musician and concerto soloist. He is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Trust Award and has been awarded grants from the Ian Potter and George Alexander Foundations.

The recital is free and open to the public. For more information, contact OBU’s School of Fine Arts at 870-245-5129.
