Ouachita students named finalists in Collegiate Performance Showcase

February 24, 2010 - Meg Gosser

Two Ouachita Baptist University students, Elisabeth Hipp and Kyle Huey, were named finalists in the 2010 Trinity Presents Collegiate Performance Showcase, sponsored by Trinity United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Ark. They will perform as part of the Performance Showcase Recital on Sunday, March 14, at 6 p.m.

Students from 10 colleges and universities in Arkansas submitted preliminary auditions on DVD featuring two musical pieces in different styles. Only four finalists were chosen by the judging panel, and each finalist received $500. The winner of the showcase will receive an additional $1,000.

“It is such an honor to be a part of this statewide competition,” said Hipp, a junior vocal performance major from Memphis, Tenn. “Even though it is a competition, it is even more for me—a wonderful opportunity to share the gift that God has given me with both the judges and the audience. Without Him, I couldn't do any of this!

“Also, I'm looking forward to getting to share this opportunity with my friend, fellow Ouachita student and performing colleague Kyle Huey,” she added.

The four finalists included Hipp; Huey, a senior musical theatre major from Grapevine, Texas; Chaz Allen, a pianist from Arkansas State University; and Noah McNair, a string bass player from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. These four students will each present a 15-20 minute performance in the Performance Showcase Recital, where a winner will be chosen.

“I know that both Kyle and I would really love to see lots of OBU students and faculty supporting us there,” Hipp said. “Tickets are free, but you must have a ticket to enter.”

Hipp is a student of Dr. Glenda Secrest, OBU associate professor of music. Huey is a student of Dr. Jon Secrest, OBU professor of music.
