Ouachita to host guest artist Sarah Schouten on horn and piano Sept. 21

Ouachita Baptist University will host guest artist Sarah Schouten on horn and piano
Tuesday, Sept. 21, in McBeth Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Ouachita’s campus.
Schouten, an internationally acclaimed musician, will perform a variety of pieces
on horn and piano. She currently works as a freelance artist and teacher while completing
her doctorate at Florida State University.
Schouten has performed with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and the Northwest Florida
Symphony Orchestra. She also maintains a private studio in Tallahassee, Fla.
Assisting her during the night’s performance will be Ouachita faculty members Ryan
Lewis, assistant professor of music, on percussion and Heather Thayer, adjunct instructor
of music, on the French horn. Lewis said he met Schouten last summer while performing
in the Rome Festival Orchestra in Italy.
Schouten is a member of TetrCor, a horn quartet that performs recitals, master classes
and clinics for colleges and high schools to promote chamber music among young musicians.
She is an accomplished artist with several awards, including being inducted into the
Honor Society of Pi Kappa Lambda, winner of the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Camp Bernstein’s
staff concerto competition as well as being awarded the sword of honor from the University
of Dayton’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota.
