Ouachita hosts Gungor in concert Sept. 9
August 31, 2011 - Nicci Fillinger
Gungor, a self-proclaimed “liturgical post-rock band,” will be in concert at Ouachita Baptist University on Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center. The concert, sponsored by Ouachita’s Campus Activities Board, is part of the university’s 125th anniversary celebration.
“Gungor is a Christian rock band from Denver, Colo., most well known for their song
‘Beautiful Things,’” said Tim Harrell, OBU’s director of campus activities. “Their
show has been described many times as not only a concert but as an ‘experience’ and
a place for worship. We hope that students will be stretched by this experience and
grow from it.”
Gungor includes Sufjan Stevens, Muse and Sigur Rós in their list of musical influences.
Michael Gungor, the band’s front man, has commented on the band’s goal, saying, “If
leading worship is just about bringing a group of people into a room so we can get
goose bumps and sing songs together, there’s not much value in that. But if leading
worship is a means to an end, that we leave this place as a different kind of people,
as part of a new humanity that God wants to create – the people that are caring for
the widows and orphans, that aren’t bound by the systems of this world but becoming
free, becoming fully engaged in our world – then that matters.”
Tickets are $10 per person and may be purchased by visiting or calling the JPAC box
office weekdays from 1-5 p.m. or online at www.obu.edu/boxoffice. For more information
