Ouachita Concert Choir and Women’s Chorus to perform Sept. 29

September 22, 2011 - Lacey Brooks

Ouachita Baptist University’s Concert Choir and Women’s Chorus will perform their fall concert Thursday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. The concert is open to the public and admission is free.

Concert Choir, which is open to all Ouachita students, includes 155 singers, the group’s largest number in recent years.

“I really enjoy being a part of Concert Choir. It’s a unique experience to sing in such a large group of my peers,” said Kinsey Ann Carpenter, a senior choral music education major from Memphis, Tenn.

“We began rehearsing on the second day of classes,” said Dr. Gary Gerber, chair of the division of music and director of Concert Choir. “The program will be a mixture of classical music and church anthems. Concert Choir has been invited to sing at the Arkansas Baptist State Convention in November, so some of the music for that convention will be presented at this concert.”

Concert Choir will perform “Psalm” by Joseph Martin, Mark Hayes’ arrangement of “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven,” “Come Unto Me” by Mark Blankenship, “Ave Maria” by Anton Bruckner, “Psalm 51” by Russ Michaels and “The Battle of Jericho” by Moses Hogan.

Women’s Chorus is an auditioned group with 42 members this year. The chorus is directed by David Stanley, visiting instructor of music, and accompanied by pianist Glenda Aldridge. They are set to perform “Awake My Heart to Sing” by Mark Patterson, Mark Hayes’ arrangement of “Grace,” “Heart, We Will Forget Him” by James Mulholland, “Chi la gagliarda” by Baldassare Donato and arranged by Z. Randall Stroope, “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl and “Zion’s Walls” by Aaron Copland and arranged by Glenn Koponen.

Stanley, an OBU alumnus, is new to Ouachita’s faculty this year, but not the school itself. “I graduated from Ouachita with my undergraduate music degree in 2001. I’m so incredibly proud to have been a part of this excellent choral music program as a student,” Stanley said. “To be back on the other end of the spectrum as a faculty member is a fantastic honor.”

The Women’s Chorus program “is going to be very good and I think we have some very talented new freshmen this year. I believe the trio on Ave Maria will really add something to the concert,” said Jennifer Carney, a senior choral music education major from Van Buren, Ark.
