Ouachita faculty Garrett and Keck to present recital Oct. 11

October 07, 2011 - Nicci Fillinger

Ouachita Baptist University will host vocalist Dr. Maggie Garrett, assistant professor of music, and pianist Dr. Ouida Keck, Addie Mae Maddox Professor of Music, in a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. They will perform songs in English, French and German ranging from the Baroque period to the modern day.

The recital will open with "Let the Bright Seraphim" from George Frideric Handel's oratorio Samson. Dr. Craig Hamilton, the Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of bands, will join Garrett and Keck for this piece on the piccolo trumpet.

Next on the program are three German songs by Gustav Mahler. The songs are settings of texts from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, a collection of German folk poems published between 1805 and 1808. “I have taught these songs in vocal literature for a few years and have always admired them,” Garrett said. “This recital was my impetus to finally learn the songs. Mahler's settings of the texts capture the humor of the poetry within a beautiful musical framework.”

The third set on the program consists of two French songs from Darius Milhaud's Chansons de Ronsard. These songs are settings of poetry by Pierre de Ronsard which showcase the coloratura soprano range.

Next is Songs of Fields and Prairies, a seven-song cycle by current American composer Jocelyn Hagen. This work includes settings of poetry that revolve around fields or prairies. For her doctoral dissertation, Garrett performed a staged version of this song cycle and wrote a director's guide for staging the cycle.

The final song on the program is “Compromise” by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich, an award-winning duo who have composed together for 18 years. “This comedic musical theatre-style song has an OBU twist to it,” Garrett hinted.
