Sarah Wood to perform senior composition recital Oct. 10

October 10, 2011 - Breanne Goodrum

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host Sarah Elizabeth Wood in her senior composition recital Monday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall.

Wood, a senior music theory and composition major from Dallas, Texas, composed all of the pieces performed during her time at Ouachita. Several Ouachita students and faculty members will participate in the recital as performers and instrumentalists.

Each of Wood’s compositions holds special significance for her. Every piece has a story,” she said. “It’s about the emotion and it’s about sharing the emotion and connecting through that.”

Starting the recital with “Escape” will be Emily Anderson, a sophomore Christian studies and Christian missions double major from Siloam Springs, Ark., on violin; Jacob Sturgeon, a sophomore choral music education major from Pine Bluff, Ark., on cello; and T.J. Bailey, a sophomore business administration major from Fort Smith, Ark., on piano. Carli Sasser, a sophomore choral music education major from Hamburg, Ark., will then perform “Desert,” a piece including words by Robert Frost.

Carrie Brown, a piano performance graduate from Knoxville, Ark., will then take the stage on piano for “Bedouir.” A piece for alto saxophone and piano titled “Regret” will then be performed by Alex Goff, a senior instrumental music education major from Nashville, Ark., on alto saxophone and Jenna Cummings, a junior church music major from Jacksonville, Ark., on piano.

A multi movement performance inspired by the works of Shakespeare titled “Scenes that Shaketh the Speare” will follow. In the first movement, Xavier Lagunas, a senior musical theatre major from Arlington, Texas, will sing “Tomorrow,” inspired by Macbeth. “To Be or Not to Be,” inspired by Hamlet, will follow and will be sung by Grace Johnson, a senior vocal performance major from Tyler, Texas. The final movement, “Those Lips (Sonnet 145),” will be sung by John Tneoh, a  junior vocal performance major from Malaysia. Phyllis Walker will accompany the vocalists on piano.

Another piano selection will be performed by Cummings titled “Why?” The Ouachita Singers, accompanied by Cummings, will conclude the recital with the selection, “Hosea’s Lament,” a song based on the biblical text of Hosea 5:14-15 and 6:4-7.

The recital is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the School of Fine Arts at (870) 245-5129.
