Red Cross to host Battle of the Ravine Blood Drive at Ouachita Oct. 17-18

Ouachita Baptist University and the Red Cross will host the third annual Battle of
the Ravine Blood Drive on Monday, Oct. 17, and Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 11 a.m. to 6
p.m. in the Evans Student Center Banquet Rooms.
The event plays off of the decades-long rivalry between Ouachita and Henderson State
University and is open to all students, staff and visitors.
“Randy Stribling with the Red Cross suggested the idea a few years ago to get more
involvement and to make the blood drive a fun event,” said Tammy Barnes, the campus
activities secretary.
“Each day here in Arkansas the Red Cross needs to collect in excess of 500 units of
blood to meet the needs of some 50 hospitals in the greater Ozark region we supply,”
said Stribling, a donor recruiter for the Red Cross. “Collecting 100 units on one
drive is very significant to helping us meet that need.”
“It is a great way for our faculty, staff and students to help the Red Cross with
the blood supply, and the school with the most percentage of donors will receive a
trophy,” Barnes added. Ouachita took the trophy in 2009 and HSU won the competition
in 2010.
“Each student, staff or visitor who presents to donate will receive a custom-designed
Battle of the Ravine Blood Drive T-shirt as our way of saying thank you to each wonderful
donor,” Stribling noted. “They are indeed life savers.”
