March 21, 2012 - Brooke Zimny
Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host Rachel Harris in her senior
musical theatre recital March 27 at 7:30 p.m. The recital, which is free and open
to the public, will be held in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall.
“This recital is the culmination of my four years of musical theatre experience here
at Ouachita Baptist University,” Harris said. “It is going to require that I apply
all the things I have learned from my music, theatre and dance classes to 25 minutes
worth of music and scene work. It is an exciting challenge!”
Harris is a native of Springdale, Ark., and is the daughter of David and Renae Harris
of Springdale. During her time at Ouachita, Harris has earned first place in the upper
music theatre division of the state National Association of Teachers of Singing auditions
as well as fourth place in OBU’s Shambarger Competition for Singers. She has been
named a Ben Elrod Scholar and a Presser Foundation Scholar and has been named to Ouachita’s
President’s and Dean’s Lists. Harris appeared as The Queen of the Night in Ouachita
Opera Theatre’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute and has studied under Dr. Margaret Garrett, OBU assistant professor of music.
Harris will open the recital with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera”
from Phantom of the Opera, followed by Richard Rodgers’ “The Lady Is a Tramp” from Babes in Arms and Kerrigan and Lowdermilk’s “My Party Dress” from Henry and Mudge. She will continue with Alan Menken’s “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid and will then perform a scene from The Merry Wives of Windsor by William Shakespeare. The recital will conclude with Leonard Bernstein’s “Glitter
and Be Gay” from Candide. Harris will be accompanied by Phyllis Walker.
