OBU’s Alpha Tau to host Spring Swing competition April 10

April 09, 2012 - Breanne Goodrum

Alpha Tau at Ouachita Baptist University will host Spring Swing on Tuesday, April 10, from 7-9 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Arkadelphia. Tickets are $3 per person or $5 for couples. Entry is free with the purchase of a Spring Swing shirt to be worn at the event.

Alpha Tau is the student organization affiliated with OBU’s Carl Goodson Honors Program.

“The event is for couples who like the experience of swing dancing but with a twist,” said Alpha Tau co-chair Alex Nelson, a sophomore business administration and marketing major from Frisco, Texas. “It’s all for fun but of course there’s a prize for those who last the longest on the dance floor and for those who dance the best, getting the most votes from other attendees. Those who want to learn the art of swing dancing are also more than welcome to come.”

Students who choose not to compete will also have the opportunity to dance during breaks in the competition. Adam Gosnell, a junior Christian studies and theology major from El Dorado, Ark., and Rebecca Wright, a senior mathematics major from Jackson, Tenn., will host swing dance lessons during the event.

“I went to a national convention for honors directors and honors students and heard many people talking about all the fun events the honors organizations on their campuses sponsored,” said Dr. Barbara Pemberton, associate professor of Christian missions and director of the Carl Goodson Honors Program. “When I came back and mentioned it to a few students, they jumped on the idea, eventually coming up with Spring Swing.”

“I'm looking forward to watching the amazing students who will be competing,” Pemberton added. “I'm hoping faculty will come too.”
