The best way to tell the success story of Ouachita Baptist University is through the stories of its graduates and their work, Ouachita President Rex Horne told messengers and guests gathered at the Arkansas Baptist State Convention annual meeting Tuesday, Oct. 30, at First Baptist Church of Cabot.

Dr. Horne shared about Amy York, a 2009 Ouachita graduate from Dallas.

“She came with dreams of being a performer in the theatre. As a sophomore, she went on a mission trip to India organized through our Pruet School of Christians Studies,” Horne said. “There, she discovered a love for the nations and came back to us to add a major in missions.”

Horne added that York also developed a love for the Russian language and received a Rotary scholarship, enabling her to study overseas.

“Amy connected with a group from Dallas and worked at a Russian orphanage,” he added. “She taught the children there through drama and music and developed a performing group that helped bring awareness to the needs of children. Currently, Amy is musical director for the Colorado Youth Theatre.”

Horne said Ouachita’s Hickingbotham School of Business recently sent a team to serve in Honduras.

“They have been involved with an orphanage built by two Honduran carpenters,” he noted.  Students serving in the country are developing a website and a business plan for the carpenters.

“The hope is that this business model can be replicated with other small businesses to free more Hondurans from the grip of poverty,” he said. “Other business endeavors are being studied that could result in more help for Honduran children.

“Our students – past, present and future – will be difference makers,” Horne declared. “Thank you for your support through the Cooperative Program. Thank you for your prayers and for the students you send our way.”
