January 16, 2013 - Brooke Zimny

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host Ouachita alumna Dr. Amanda Cox in a guest clarinet concert Friday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall on Ouachita’s campus.

“The Division of Music is thrilled to have the opportunity to bring one of our alumnae back to campus to present a clarinet recital,” said Dr. Caroline Taylor, professor of music. Since Cox’s time at Ouachita, Taylor added, she has become “highly respected as a specialist in music of the Czech Republic.”

The Jan. 18 recital will also feature Dr. Adam Haas, Ouachita lecturer in music, on piano. The two will begin with Bohuslav Martinů’s “Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano,” followed by “Chant Slave” by J. Edouard Barat. Cox will continue with “Three Studies for Solo Clarinet” by Karel Husa, and Haas will return for the recital’s conclusion, “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano” by Francis Poulenc.

Cox is a private clarinet teacher and freelance musician in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and also teaches lessons and master classes in the Keller and Forney Independent School Districts. Cox earned her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from Texas Tech University, where she also served as a graduate instructor. As a specialist in the music of the Czech Republic, Cox also studied with Karel Dohnal and Stepan Koutnik, prominent clarinet instructors in Prague. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance from Ouachita in 2006. She has performed with various large and chamber music ensembles throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Haas teaches group piano, applied piano and worship music at Ouachita. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the University of Colorado, where he also served as a graduate teaching assistant. He has performed with the New York Concerti Sinfonietta, the Loveland Orchestra and the Colorado State University Orchestra and is an active lecturer.
