TRIO to host variety of spring events at Ouachita

February 04, 2013 - Ryleigh Salmon

Ouachita Baptist University’s TRIO programs seek to “Help Students Obtain Their Goals” with a variety of events this spring.

TRIO’s two programs, Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search, are federally funded to provide first-generation college students of low-income families with the opportunity to pursue an education after high school. Upward Bound serves students in grades nine through 12 while Educational Talent Search serves students in grades six through 12 from the Southwest region of Arkansas.

“In addition to educational avenues, we present students with cultural experiences,” said Brenda Bradley-Philson, director of TRIO programs. “When you think about the students we serve, they’re only aware of their immediate surroundings. They’re in a disadvantage bubble. TRIO actually assists in paving the way to bridge the gap between those kids that ordinarily will not have the opportunity” to attend college.

On Dec. 7 of last year, there were 450 students on campus for Talent Search Day. Ouachita teamed up with Henderson State’s TRIO and their Greek organizations to provide students a firsthand look at what college life is like.

In February, TRIO will take students on two college hops to the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. “Calling it a college hop instead of a college visit makes it more fun,” Philson added. “I think the kids enjoy it more and are more excited to ‘hop’ around to different schools.”

The final event of the school year, a Senior Etiquette Luncheon, will be held in April. This will be the seniors’ last event with TRIO. While at a restaurant in Little Rock, the seniors will be presented with an award to acknowledge their completion of the TRIO programs.
