January 23, 2014 - Brooke Zimny
Ouachita Baptist University’s Art Club and Department of Art and Design are hosting
the annual Student Juried Art Show in Hammons Gallery in Mabee Fine Arts Center Jan.
20-Feb. 7. Treslyn Shipley, a sophomore studio art major from Arlington, Texas, won
first place for her scratch art piece, “Ms. Charlotte.” A reception will be held Saturday,
Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the gallery.
“The Student Juried Art Show is an excellent way for students to showcase some of
their finest work among their peers,” said Shipley. “The show is not only great experience
for each student artist but also an opportunity for Ouachita’s Art Club to become
involved in the student body.”
Shipley said her winning piece, “Ms. Charlotte,” is “a portrait of a sweet friend
I met through the ElderServe Program,” a program of OBU’s Elrod Center for Family
and Community, and she created it “in remembrance of the moments spent with her.”
Shipley added her encouragement to the community to visit the show to see a selection
of the talent Ouachita students possess.
“The juried show serves as a showcase of the best of the best artwork Ouachita’s student
body has to offer,” said Art Club President Katelyn Smith, a sophomore art and education
major from Roe, Ark. “This year we have some works done with interesting media that
I feel the student body will enjoy getting to see.”
“Entering juried competitions is an important step in the process of becoming a professional
artist,” noted Summer Bruch, assistant professor of Art and Design. “It is an honor
to be chosen to be in the show. … Only the best of the best are asked to display their
work by the juror.”
The juried show is open to all Ouachita students, Art and Design major or not, and
features more than 30 works from students across campus. David Stoddard, professor
of art at Henderson State University, served as juror for this year’s exhibit. Stoddard
teaches graphic and media design, computer art and papermaking; his handmade paper
art has recently been featured at the Arkadelphia Arts Center.
Kathryn Coffey, a junior studio art and mass communications major from Rowlett, Texas,
earned second place for “Coffee Date,” which used coffee grounds and acrylic. Libby
Harrington, a junior studio art major from Pearcy, Ark., earned third place for “Arkansas
Catfish,” which used recycled cigarette butts, cartons and other found objects.
The Feb. 1 reception will recognize these winners, and other awards also will be announced.
Regular gallery hours for the exhibit are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The
exhibit is also available during evenings when other School of Fine Arts events are
held in Mabee Fine Arts Center. For more information, contact Summer Bruch at [email protected] or (870) 245-4655.
