Ouachita’s Summer Bruch displays artwork at UALR’s “Primary Clay” exhibit
February 24, 2014 - Taylor Tomlinson
Summer Bruch, assistant professor of Art and Design at Ouachita Baptist University,
is one of 12 artists whose work is currently on display at University of Arkansas
in Little Rock’s “Primary Clay.” The exhibit is in Gallery III of UALR’s Fine Arts
Building and will be on display through Tuesday, March 11.
“‘Primary Clay’ is a group exhibition featuring artists living in Arkansas and working
with clay,” said Brad Cushman, gallery director and curator. “Examples of both functional
and sculptural ceramics will be featured in this exhibition.”
According to Bruch, her artwork “A Sketchbook of Cups” is a “3-D version of a moleskin
sketchbook. Each cup is an exercise of unedited artistic productivity.”
“Artists use sketchbooks for a variety of reasons,” Bruch added. “They serve as a
melting pot of ideas, research and inspiration. Some sketchbooks contain highly polished
images while others are a collection of partial images, recording uninhibited bursts
of creativity.”
Bruch, who has taught at Ouachita since 2008, holds degrees from Central Missouri
State University and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
The gallery will feature guest lecturer Kensuke Yamada, a resident artist at The Clay
Studio in Philadelphia, Pa., on Thursday, March 6, at 5 p.m. in UALR’s Fine Arts Building
room 161. The gallery will open following the lecture for a casual meet and greet
session.
The gallery is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to
1 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
