Ouachita honors student achievements at annual Academic Awards Banquet

More than 100 students from Ouachita Baptist University were recently honored at the university’s 2014 Academic Awards Banquet. The event recognized various academic and leadership achievements of the students throughout the past year.

The annual banquet is sponsored by Ouachita’s Student Senate. Outgoing Student Senate President Lindsey Fowler, a senior political science, history and business administration/finance major from Arkadelphia, Ark., presided over the event and Ouachita President Rex Horne led the swearing in for new Student Senate President Josh Rubin, a junior biology major from Dallas.

Chis Redmon was awarded Ouachita’s highest academic honor as the university’s Overall Academic Achiever. He also was named top academic achiever in the Pruet School of Christian Studies, Outstanding student in Biblical studies and received the Old Testament Hebrew Award and the Robert Stagg New Testament Greek Award. Redmon is a senior philosophy, Biblical languages and Christian studies/Biblical studies triple major from Little Rock, Ark.

Top academic achievers in each of the other schools include: Michelle Perez, a senior political science and business administration/finance and management major from Maracaibo, Venezuela, Hickingbotham School of Business; Rachel Carr, a senior early childhood education major from Cherokee Village, Ark., Huckabee School of Education; Caitlin Secrest, a senior voice performance major from Arkadelphia, Ark., School of Fine Arts; Ellen Eubanks, a senior English major from Arkadelphia, Ark., School of Humanities; Tim Horton, a senior professional chemistry and physics major from Arkadelphia, Ark., J.D. Patterson School of Natural Sciences; and Lindsey Fowler, W.H. Sutton School of Social Sciences.

Ouachita’s outstanding seniors, selected by faculty and staff, are Tim Horton, Senior Outstanding Man, and Lindsey Fowler, Senior Outstanding Woman.

Dr. Johnny Wink, Betty Burton Peck Professor of English, was named by students as the Lavell Cole Most Inspirational Professor.

Other university awards include the Mrs. J. R. Grant Endowed Awards for freshman and senior female students and the Mrs. Betty Oliver Grant Endowed Awards for sophomore and junior female students. Recipients of these awards include Haley Martin, a freshman mass communications and Christian studies/Christian ministries major from Little Rock, Ark.; Sadie Sasser, a sophomore Christian studies/Biblical studies major from Hamburg, Ark.; Katie Theriot, a junior Spanish and communication sciences and disorders major from Alexandria, La.; and Hannah Bridges, a senior English major from Clarksville, Ark.

The Rotary Club Service-Above-Self Award was presented to David Sypult, a senior accounting and business administration/finance major from Rogers, Ark.

  • Blue Ribbon Finishers: Timothy Bailey, a senior worship arts major from Fort Smith, Ark.; Sarah Bishop, a senior chemistry and biology; Molly Bowman, a senior mass communications and Christian studies/church theology major from Greenbrier, Ark.; Sarah Davis, a senior theatre arts and Christian studies/Christian ministries major; Anna English, a senior English major from Coppell, Texas; Sally Ferguson, a senior English major from Maud, Ark.; Ellen Eubanks, a senior English major from Arkadelphia, Ark.; Drake Hardy, a senior biology major from Royal, Ark.; Katie Hopmann, a senior studio art major from Cypress, Texas; Lacey Johnson, a senior history and theatre arts major from Little Rock, Ark.; Ally Lemos, a senior early childhood education major from Hanford, Calif.; Alexander Nelson, a senior business administration/ finance and management major from Frisco, Texas; Jason Stevenson, a senior biology and chemistry major from Guy, Ark.; Anna Wakeling, a senior English major from Bryant, Ark.; Rebekah Ward, a senior biology and chemistry major from Little Rock, Ark.; Clark Whitney, a senior political science and Christian studies/ church theology major; and William Wolf, a senior business administration/ finance and marketing major from Waco, Texas.

  • Most Valuable Professor: Dr. Lori Hensely, associate professor of biology and holder of the J.D. Patterson Chair of Biology.
